17–19 July 2026
10:00–18:00 daily (1-hour lunch break)
Post Office House Studio, Blackness, Scotland
Maximum 8 participants
A rare opportunity to immerse yourself in three days of Butoh practice, creative renewal, and deep embodied exploration in the extraordinary coastal setting of Blackness.
Designed as an intimate small-group intensive, this workshop offers focused guidance, personal attention, and the time to move beyond habitual patterns into greater presence, imagination, and authenticity.
What is Butoh?
Butoh is a radical movement art that emerged in Japan and has become known worldwide for its depth, sensitivity, and transformative approach to the body.
Rather than learning fixed steps or choreography, Butoh explores:
- truthful movement rather than performed movement
- imagination as a source of physical expression
- heightened awareness of breath, sensation, and presence
- transformation through image, atmosphere, and impulse
- the body beyond conventional beauty or expectation
This workshop offers an accessible introduction to Butoh principles while also providing rich material for experienced dancers, performers, and movers.
What We Will Explore
Across three days we will work through:
- guided physical and sensory movement practices
- improvisation and Butoh scores
- breath, weight, grounding, and body awareness
- connection through partner and group movement
- work with various materials and objects
- creative research in studio and selected outdoor locations nearby
- forest and shoreline practices using landscape as inspiration
- pathways into personal creative material (always optional and respectfully held)
- composition, presence, and performance awareness
Who Is It For?
Open to:
- beginners with curiosity
- dancers and performers
- movers of all backgrounds
- artists seeking new inspiration
- people wishing to reconnect with body and imagination
No previous Butoh or dance experience required.
